LENT

Idea (inspired by Hannah):

To give up reading books for Lent. My friend, Cleve, described it as cruel and unusual. But on the other hand, what could be more sensible for me?

I've thought to use it as an opportunity to simply focus on scripture. I wanted to work through some OT material into the Gospels toward Easter.
I'd thought to read Leviticus, Deuteronomy, I&II Samuel, and Isaiah before heading into the Gospels. What do you think? Would these contextualize Christ and his Passion well enough for the 40 days? Maybe it's too ambitious a list.

Help me. Join me?

  1. My priest gave me the same suggestion. Other than the 2 books that I'll have to read for a 'spiritual education' group I'm leading at the parish, I think I'll be doing the same.

As for the Scriptural reading and selection, I think it's wonderful and depending on your schedule it's doable. The Law, the Prophets and the Gospels - Christ is them all in the fullest. I'd be glad to read these as well.

  2. Oh, if an Orthodox priest said to do this, I don't think I can.

  3. ok, what about a methodist pastor?
glad to hear you guys getting "back to the bible"

of course all that book learnin' is nice but the bible is the one book you should want on a desert island - that and jack daniels and a good knife.

trying to think of other protestant "only read the bible" quotes, but they escape me.

today when you sent this email I was at a little methodist campground holed up and working on my lenten sermon schedule.

after working through the lectionary and whatnot i've about decided to preach all the old testament texts this time around and i'd be happy to read along with you guys, though more slowly no doubt.
